Is it possible to rehabilitate large-scale damaged ecosystems, improve the lives of people trapped in poverty, and sequester carbon naturally? John D. Liu has proven that it is. His film, “Hope in a Changing Climate,” showcases approaches that have worked on the Loess Plateau in China, Ethiopia and Rwanda. “INTO THE HEART OF THE ECUADOR’S YASUNI PEOPLE” by Yale Environment 360
Few places on earth harbor as much biodiversity as the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve, a 6,500-square-mile territory in eastern Ecuador where the Amazon basin ascends into the Andes Mountains. But Yasuni also sits atop vast reserves of oil, and this rainforest wilderness, home to the indigenous Waorani people, faces intense development pressure.
In this Yale Environment 360 video, filmmaker Ryan Killackey travels into the heart of Yasuni with seven scientists and chronicles their work as they inventory the reserve’s remarkable birds, fish, animals, and plants. Through their work, the researchers hope to bolster international initiatives to preserve a large swath of this threatened land….

LIFEWISE – April 5, 2013: We all have our opinions, principles and philosophies about life and we must be very careful about infringing on those of others. Every person should be able to follow that inner voice without external influences constantly telling them they’re wrong. However there is one choice we could all make right now that would transform our world to benefit all living things and the Earth itself.
That is, choosing nature and each other above all else. So many of us have been deschooled on this concept that it may take decades for the scales to tip so that we all start respecting our world again.
By embracing Mother Nature, we adopt the foundation of all she has to offer. We understand that she is never mistaken and will always do the right thing for Earth’s inhabitants.

Energy independence. Two words that became very important in the U.S. politics. For years now, the United States has tried to lower its dependence on foreign oil for its energy needs. With stability in the Middle East in question, drilling at home has never been more attractive, but it often comes at a cost.
Natural gas extraction – fracking – is being touted as the answer. The way fracking is taking place, there are questions being asked about the process and its implications. People have been aware for decades that the rock formation known as the Marcellus Shale has natural gas trapped inside it. But it took professor Terry Engelder to figure out how much was there. And what he found shocked everyone. Watch Documentary Fracking in America | Watch Free Documentary Online.

“The archeological record indicates that civilizational collapse does not come suddenly out of the blue. Archeologists analyzing earlier civilizations talk about a decline-and-collapse scenario. Economic and social collapse was almost always preceded by a period of environmental decline….
“No previous civilization has survived the ongoing destruction of its natural supports. Nor will ours. Yet economists look at the future through a different lens. Relying heavily on economic data to measure progress, they see the near 10-fold growth in the world economy since 1950 and the associated gains in living standards as the crowning achievement of our modern civilization….More….Two Views of Our Future: Science Versus Mainstream Economics : TreeHugger.

Given that it takes hundreds of thousands to millions of years for evolution to build diversity back up to pre-crash levels after major extinction episodes, increased rates of extinction are of particular concern, especially because global and regional diversity today is generally lower than it was 20,000 years ago as a result of the last planetary state shift. … Possible too are substantial losses of ecosystem services required to sustain the human population. … Although the ultimate effects of changing biodiversity and species compositions are still unknown, if critical thresholds of diminishing returns in ecosystem services were reached over large areas and at the same time global demands increased … widespread social unrest, economic instability and loss of human life could result
How close are we to such a global state shift? One way to conceptualize it is to visualize the percentage of the Earth’s terrestrial ecosystems that have seen local state shifts:

The Objectification of Life – and The Huge Price We Are Paying
What is it about the human psyche that is willing to destroy the very foundations of life that humanity (and all species) depends upon for survival? Aren’t we supposed to be the most “intelligent” species on the planet? Sadly, facts are showing that we have far less understanding of the natural balances required for the planet than our arrogance and intellect would suppose.
It seems this disease is pervasive right across the globe. Like a swarm of locusts, we are ravaging and razing the earth to a point where life can no longer survive. We continue to over-fish our oceans until 90% of the big fish are gone, devastating the natural ocean systems and their biodiversity. Why? For profit and under the guise of “feeding the people” Overfishing leaves swaths of Mediterranean barren
We continue to ravage the forests that hold so much life that maintains the natural balance and biodiversity of our lands, often displacing indigenous peoples from their homes, creating dependency. For What? Profit and the hunger/demand for timber and clearing of forests for non-regional monocrops, destroying thousands of species and their habitat in the process. Our Disappearing Forests. (It takes 100 years to grow a 100 year-old tree)
We continue to “drill baby drill” even as we are faced with horrific oil disasters world-wide, destroying land and ocean life and ecosystems and costing billions in cleanups. Why? For profit and the hunger for cheap fossil-fuel energy, oil and gasoline. Man-Made Irreversible Changes To Our Climate,
Environment and Life On Earth
MAY 20, 2013 – DEMOCRACY NOW – VIDEO REPORT
The arguments for and against climate engineering, and reveals the extent of vested interests linking researchers, venture capitalists and corporations with Clive Hamilton, professor of public ethics at Charles Sturt University in Canberra, Australia, He’s the author of Earthmasters: The Dawn of the Ag, e of Climate Engineering. There’s virtually no regulation of geoengineering. And when it comes to sulfate aerosol spraying, there’s nothing to prevent a government, any government, or even a corporation or a billionaire with a messiah complex, from launching a program of taking control of the Earth’s weather by installing this kind of solar shield. So the absence of governance, the absence of regulation and the exclusion, particularly of people from poor and vulnerable countries, is a very serious concern…. http://www.democracynow.org/2013/5/20/geoengineering_can_we_save_the_planet

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
“ChemTrails” and Climate GeoEngineering: Long Held as a “conspiracy theory” evidence is now emerging that Climate Engineering is already happening around the world, and has been for years. Why has this information been withheld? Could this “climate remediation”, “solar radiation management” experiment be further cause for the increasingly violent and extreme weather around the world? Who is behind it? The following videos, articles and investigations lay out indisputable evidence that climate remediation/climate geoengineering is already underway and we should all be outraged at this secretive, potentially devastating assault on our planet without serious, independent scientific peer reviewed studies. The only way to stop the impending adverse affects of climate change is to stop doing what is creating it, not further destroying our atmosphere and environment, or finding bandaid “solutions” that allow us to keep on with the industrial pollutions and environmental degradations that created it in the first place.
The World of Geoengineering | ETC Group Maps of Known Earth System Experimentations ETC Group publishes a world map of geoengineering — the large-scale manipulation of earth or climate systems. While there is no complete record of the scores of weather and climate control projects in dozens of countries, this map is the first attempt to document the expanding scope of research and experimentation. Almost 300 geoengineering projects/experiments are represented on the map belonging to 10 different types of climate-altering technologies.
Comment by @pdjmoo: “Even the idea of manipulating our climate makes my hair stand on end. We humans have so little knowledge about the grand intricacies of how our natural world and atmosphere work. It is all interconnected in such intricate ways and science is just in the infancy stages of understanding it. Remembering that the atmosphere has no boundaries, nor can we humans control the wind or ocean patterns, the prospect of a devastating domino affect on land and sea could literally wipe out all life on earth. There is only one way to address climate change…and that is to stop doing what is creating it. Trying to address the symptom instead of the cause is like treating sun-stroke instead of staying out of the sun”…pdjmoo SEE My “Urgent Memo To The World” Read the rest of this entry »

Can you imagine yourself sitting on a huge pile of garbage, not being able to breathe? Sea and rivers have disappeared, leaving behind small creeks of smelly water. Yes, it’s a definite possibility and a perfect picture of our Earth after 50 years. Our lifestyle and our ignorance toward Mother Earth could make this happen. Tell me how would you feel then? Around the world the picture is as bad or worse: the International Union for the Conservation of Nature believes one in five mammals, one in three amphibians and one in seven birds are extinct or globally threatened, and other species groups still being assessed are showing similar patterns.
Simon Stuart, a senior IUCN scientist, has warned that for the first time since the dinosaurs humans are driving plants and animals to extinction faster than new species can evolve. (read rest of article….
COCHABAMBA, Bolivia — A fundamental critique of capitalism as the source of climate change pervaded the People’s World Conference on Climate Change, from the opening speech of Bolivian President Evo Morales
The main cause of climate change is capitalism. As people who inhabit Mother Earth, we have the right to say that the cause is capitalism, to protest limitless growth. … More than 800 million people live on less than $2 per day. Until we change the capitalist system, our measures to address climate change are limited.” (read rest of article…
Copenhagen: Unrealistic Expectations?
Saturday, December 19, 2009
It is not the expectations that were unrealistic, but the limited time frame in which we expected such mammoth life-changing decisions to be made with global consensus.
Let us be very clear. Although much of the world has been pre-occupied with global economical woes, there will be no economy or jobs if the climate and eco-systems collapse. We have to find a way to restore the health of the planet while creating a (new) economy that works for all. And we cannot find new paradigm solutions with old paradigm models.
We are in a New World
Now that the UN Copenhagen Summit has ended with so many expectations unmet, there will be lots of recriminations, “shooting from the hip” accusations and plenty of blame going around. The World as a collective political body, cannot turn on a dime – they need time to deliberate, jockey for position and short of a major catastrophe (God Forbid) the wheels of politics and government move slowly – particularly in a democracy. It is not as if the world is going to end tomorrow – and, in their minds, the matter can be deferred while they attend to more pressing domestic issues – like the economic crisis – and their re-elections. The pressure must be kept on.
The U.N. may need restructuring for 21st Century needs, but before we slam it let’s get educated on what it is and what it can and cannot do: WHAT IS THE UNITED NATIONS: http://ow.ly/OmTP
What Was Copenhagen? About 45000 traveled to the UN climate summit in Copenhagen – the vast majority convinced of the need for a new global agreement on climate change. So why did the summit end without one – and without agreement? Read the rest of this entry »
