Humans must change behaviour to save bees, vital for food production

– UN report March 2011 – The potentially disastrous decline in bees, a vital pollinating element in food production for the growing global population, is likely to continue unless humans profoundly change their ways, from the use of insecticides to air pollution, according to a United Nations report released today.

Profiting From the Destruction of Our Planet

This particular VIDEO  addresses THE OCEANS and the mechanized, industrialized overfishing industry.

We have objectified life on earth to such an extent that we forget profits and abundance depends on us restoring and nurturing that which we depend on for our very existence. Remember, we cannot restore our forests, soil, oceans in five minutes.  It took millions of years to evolve and in 50 years we have almost totally destroyed her ability to regenerate within her own natural systems  (See my blogs AN URGENT MEMO TO THE WORLD and  CHANGE WE MUST)

Our Big Industrial Food industries have taken us to a point of almost no Return.   We consuming ourselves out of existence, through total disregard for the need of the planet to maintain its ecosystems, biodiversity and health in order to feed us. We are now facing a dying planet.  We have lost touch with the once-upon-a-time hands-on connection to our natural world. The mega industrial corporations keep trying to contain Her and force Her to produce more than She is capable of.  We have even resorted to genetically engineering our food sources, creating aquatic man-made farming, confining our animals by the thousands in CAFOs, breaking down biodiversity through monoculture BigAg farming and allowing industrial fishing to take all the fish in the sea they can.  The Planet is in Crisis, but it is still business as usual.  And the multi-million public relations green-washing campaigns are in full swing so  we can keep on keeping on with the very practices that have brought us to this brink. More, Bigger, Faster. This insanity and craving for profits, control and domination, makes us blind to our first priority–which is nurturing and sustaining our natural world–our only life support system (See my blog: Urgent Memo to The World )

THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION IS UPON US – CAN HUMANS SURVIVE?

Nature – The Great Teacher

Michael O’Malley, vice-president of human capital at Sibson Consulting, took up beekeeping as a hobby and was surprised to find that it provided insights into his day job of advising on risk management.

WE NEED OUR BEES, ALIVE NOT DEAD

O’Malley writes in the Harvard Business Review that beehives are structured for long-term growth and as a result the pollen gatherers have become masters of risk management, unlike many “too big to fail” banks.

He writes: “When a colony gets too large, it becomes operationally unwieldy and grossly inefficient and the hive splits. Eventually, risk is spread across many hives and revenue sources in contrast to relying on one big, vulnerable “super-hive” for sustenance.”

Other lessons he has taken from his hobby are that queen bees do not appear to be subject to short-term quarterly pollen and nectar targets. “No queen bee is under pressure for quarterly pollen and nectar targets. The hive is only beholden to the long term. Indeed, beehives appear to underperform at times because they could collect more,” he writes.

Instead, decision-making is decentralised with individual bees empowered to take decisive action, bolstered by a “disciplined career development program”: “By the time bees are sent into the field, they are prepared — and, even then, novice foragers are frequently accompanied by veterans who show them how to efficiently and productively move among, and work, the flowers.”……More

The Objectification of Life – and The Huge Price We Are Paying

By @pdjmoo March 10, 2012

What is it about the human psyche that is willing to destroy the very foundations of life that humanity (and all species) depends upon for survival?  Aren’t we supposed to be the most “intelligent” species on the planet?  Sadly, facts are showing that we have far less understanding of the natural balances required for the planet than our arrogance and intellect would suppose.

It seems this disease is pervasive right across the globe.  Like a swarm of locusts, we are ravaging and razing the earth to a point where life can no longer survive.  We continue to over-fish our oceans until 90% of the big fish are gone, devastating the natural ocean systems and their biodiversity.  Why?  For profit and under the guise of “feeding the people” Overfishing leaves swaths of Mediterranean barren

We continue to ravage the forests that hold so much life that maintains the natural balance and biodiversity of our lands, often displacing indigenous peoples from their homes, creating dependency.  For What?  Profit and the hunger/demand for timber and clearing of forests for non-regional monocrops, destroying thousands of species and their habitat in the process. Our Disappearing Forests.  (It takes 100 years to grow a 100 year-old tree)

We continue to “drill baby drill” even as we are faced with horrific oil disasters world-wide, destroying land and ocean life and ecosystems and costing billions in cleanups.  Why? The arguments for and against climate engineering, and reveals the extent of vested interests linking researchers, venture capitalists and corporations with Clive Hamilton, professor of public ethics at Charles Sturt University in Canberra, Australia, He’s the author of Earthmasters: The Dawn of the Ag, e of Climate Engineering. There’s virtually no regulation of geoengineering. And when it comes to sulfate aerosol spraying, there’s nothing to prevent a government, any government, or even a corporation or a billionaire with a messiah complex, from launching a program of taking control of the Earth’s weather by installing this kind of solar shield. So the absence of governance, the absence of regulation and the exclusion, particularly of people from poor and vulnerable countries, is a very serious concern…. http://www.democracynow.org/2013/5/20/geoengineering_can_we_save_the_planet

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

“ChemTrails” and Climate GeoEngineering:  Long Held as a “conspiracy theory” evidence is now emerging that Climate Engineering is already happening around the world, and has been for years. Why has this information been withheld?  Could this “climate remediation”, “solar radiation management” experiment be further cause for the increasingly violent and extreme weather around the world?  Who is behind it?  The following videos, articles and investigations lay out indisputable evidence that climate remediation/climate geoengineering is already underway and we should all be outraged at this secretive, potentially devastating assault on our planet without serious, independent scientific peer reviewed studies.  The only way to stop the impending adverse affects of climate change is to stop doing what is creating it, not further destroying our atmosphere and environment, or finding bandaid “solutions” that allow us to keep on with the industrial pollutions and environmental degradations that created it in the first place.

Monsanto invents, produces and sells genetically modified seeds. As a chemical producer of saccharin and caffeine founded in 1901, Monsanto (and Dow Chemical and Diamond Shamrock) manufactured the highly poisonous herbicide and defoliant Agent Orange for the war in Vietnam which was excessively used. About 80 000 m³ of Agent Orange was sprayed across South Vietnam. 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to agent orange, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities, and 500,000 children born with birth defects. Agent Orange also increases the risk of various types of cancer and genetic defects. Shortly after the Vietnam War veterans reported various health complications which can be traced to exposure to Agent Orange. No Vietnamese have ever received any kind of compensation. SEE: “EL EFECTO #MONSANTO – Vietnam (1962-1974) Argentina (1996-????)ow.ly/6YAQ5. AGENT ORANGE is now being used as a pesticide on our genetically modified food crops.

Monsanto produces Posilac, a hormone to increase milk production of cows. In the US it is used on a third of all dairy cows. Monsanto is world leader in the field of bio-engineering and has branches in 46 countries. 90 percent of the cultivated genetically modified organisms, including soybeans, canola, corn and cotton, are Monsanto patents. The practices of this company worldwide under criticism. “They want to control everything and seed make all the food production in the world their property,” says a farmer on Monsanto.

Understand the game.   This huge monolith and juggernaut is consuming all agriculture world-wide, reducing it to a dangerous monoculture loaded with altered genes that this human body is not designed to assimilate.  So long as Monsanto can keep research out of the hands of independent scientists, they control not only the research results but all the publicity around it.  Monsanto is one of the most powerful and manipulative corporations in the world aligned with the other mega-corporate monopolies.  It has the whole world population, the governments and politicians by the throat.  They can buy their way into any situation, with huge budgets for lobbying, blackmail, coercion, graft, payola, political contributions and will do anything they have to take over the entire global food supply.  You will find in the near future that the global explosion of diabetes and obesity alone all coincide with the sneak entry of gmos into our food supply 20 years ago.   The human body is not designed to assimilate this type of toxic geoengineering.  An anti-trust issue that no-one or no government is willing to touch…that is how powerful we have allowed Monsanto to become.   The issue is not gmos alone, but how it destroys the biodiversity, the soils and life with the pesticides it requires to grow.   This has affected our pollinator species declining at a terrifying rate, our water ways and all life in it, and a monoculture of industrial-produced agriculture that has adverse affects on all life….including YOURS.  Small farmers are put out of business and have no chance of standing up in the courts against the court-owned Monsanto.  The US Dept. of Agriculture is in bed with them and plays the same public relation game of pretending that we all (including small farmers) will benefit.   We are fast approaching a tipping point –a point of no return– with Gmo seeding and our entire food supply.  Our beneficial insects are killed, birds die when they eat the gmo crops/ insects; bees have been forced fed gmo pollen and we’ve lost 2/3rds of their population (and that goes for almost any species within nature constantly ingesting this diabolical chemically-aligned re-engineering of our natural food. When our cattle are fed genetically modified food it creates changes within them, we then eat it and an implosion of internal modifications begins in our bodies.   Every fast food is all gmo; from the bun, to the tomato, to the lettuce, to the pickles, to the meat, to the oil it is cooked on/in.    In effect, all life is being affected by this bioengineering of our entire food chain of which we are the end user.  Monsanto is closing in fast for global take over by owning all seed that is required for growing food see: Monsanto; seeds; produce – latimes.com http://ow.ly/74fD Monsanto has been known to threaten journalist, and farmers who oppose them as well as the press.  How powerful is that !! Once the change is in full operation, which is fast approaching, you cannot put the genie back into the box.   What sort of health and life do you want for both yourself and the life forms you eat?  Monsanto epitomizes what the Occupy Wall Street revolution is all about….total corporate control of our lives with us having no say due to the corruption within the political and news media systems and the recent Supreme Court ruling giving corporations “citizen’s rights”.   Wake Up World…NOW

The Symbiotic Relationships of Life

“Human beings have fabricated the illusion that in the 21st century they have the technological prowess to be independent of nature.  Bees underline the reality that we are more, not less, dependent on nature’s services in a world of close to 7 billion people”

10 March 2011 – The potentially disastrous decline in bees, a vital pollinating element in food production for the growing global population, is likely to continue unless humans profoundly change their ways, from the use of insecticides to air pollution, according to a United Nations report released today.“The way humanity manages or mismanages its nature-based assets, including pollinators, will in part define our collective future in the 21st century,” UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner said. “The fact is that of the 100 crop species that provide 90 per cent of the world’s food, over 70 are pollinated by bees.” READ ON: Humans must change behaviour to save bees, vital for food production – UN report.

Economic progress does not have to come at the expense of environmental health.

A new UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) report imagines a future where agriculture is no longer a main emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs)—agriculture emits anywhere from 13 to 30 percent of total GHGs worldwide. Greening agriculture, states the report, could change agriculture to “a GHG sink, while reducing deforestation and freshwater use by 55 percent and 35 percent.

Could we be facing a future without birds? Our reliance on pesticides has cut a swathe through their numbers. We must act now, argues Kate Ravilious

Birds are a real rarity these days. In his boyhood, he recalls, he would watch the acrobatics of entire flocks as they ducked and dived after insects. But now the skies are silent, barring the hum of the odd airplane. Turning back to his fruit and vegetable patch, he continues the laborious task of pollinating the raspberry plants by hand, gently brushing pollen onto the slender stigmas inside the flowers. In the past, bees, wasps, butterflies and flies would have done this job for him; nowadays such insects are likewise a rarity. Farmers instead resort to robot bees to pollinate their crops: tiny motors, encased in fuzzy fabric, which hover from flower to flower….(more… None flew over the cuckoo’s nest: A world without birds – Nature, Environment – The Independent.

FOOD AND WATER DRIVE AFRICAN LAND GRAB

by Staff Writers, Seed Daily Nairobi, Kenya (UPI) Apr 29, 2010

Rich Arab states such as Saudi Arabia have bought huge tracts of land across Africa in recent years in a bid to combat global food shortages, water scarcity and desertification and feed their burgeoning populations.

But now the scramble for Africa is intensifying, with investment banks, hedge funds, commodity traders, sovereign wealth funds, corporations and business tycoons out to grab some of the world’s cheapest land — for profit.

China has leased 6.91 million acres in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the world’s largest oil palm plantation.

South Korea’s Daewoo conglomerate planned to buy 2.9 million acres of Madagascar until the deal collapsed when rioters toppled the Indian Ocean island’s government.

“Philippe Heilberg, CEO of the New York-based investment fund Jarch Capital … has leased between 998,000 and 2.47 million acres in southern Sudan from the warlord Paulino Matip,” Le Monde Diplomatique reported.

“Foreign direct investment in agriculture is the boardroom euphemism for the new land grab and those promoting the grab spin it as a win-win situation.”

It quoted Heilberg as saying, “When food becomes scarce, the investor needs a weak state that does not force him to abide by any rules.”

According to various assessments, up to 123.5 million acres of African land — double the size of Britain — has been snapped up or is being negotiated by governments or wealthy investors. Read the rest of this entry »

A Thousand Suns | Global Oneness Project.

A Thousand Suns tells the story of the Gamo Highlands of the African Rift Valley and the unique worldview held by the people of the region. This isolated area has remained remarkably intact both biologically and culturally. It is one of the most densely populated rural regions of Africa yet its people have been farming sustainably for 10,000 years. Shot in Ethiopia, New York and Kenya, the film explores the modern world’s untenable sense of separation from and superiority over nature and how the interconnected worldview of the Gamo people is fundamental in achieving long-term sustainability, both in the region and beyond.

MONSANTO CLOSE TO TAKING OVER GLOBAL FOOD SUPPLY

Tactics being employed by Monsanto are slowly destroying the integrity of the global food supply – could be irreversible!

According to Neil Harl, an agricultural economist from Iowa State University, Monsanto now has patented control over 90 percent of seeds and seed genetics, a chilling notion that has far-reaching consequences. Since the company regularly buys up independent seed companies, its competition is dwindling and the prices for its patented seeds continue to rise.

Monsanto’s genetic modification program has reached 95 percent of domestic soybean crops and 80 percent of domestic corn crops. It has plans in the works to insert its patented genes into wheat crops as well, given U.S. farmers agree to use them this time around. These percentages are likely even higher when considering the natural and unintended spread of pollen and seeds from these genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) into conventional or organic fields.

According to a recent Associated Press investigation, agri-giant Monsanto regularly employs business practices that not only aim to eliminate all competition, but essentially position the company as the sole proprietor of all things related to food. While old news to many in the natural health community, the mainstream press is beginning to recognize the world domination tactics being employed by Monsanto that are slowly destroying the integrity of the global food supply. Even the world’s politicians believe in global warming. But they can do little without popular support, says Michael McCarthy, The Independent.

Time to confront the invisible enemy that threatens us all – Climate Change, Environment – The Independent.

You could be forgiven for thinking it’s not happening – and there, in fact, is the heart of the problem. Climate change, according to one view the greatest threat that human civilisation has ever faced, may seem a particularly nebulous danger to many people who look around them and see no evidence whatsoever of it taking place.

“Dreaming the future can create the future. We stand at the threshold of a singular opportunity in the human experiment: To re-imagine how to live on Earth in ways that honor the web of life, each other and future generations. It’s a revolution from the heart of nature — and the human heart.

“We also stand at the brink of worldwide ecological and civilizational collapse. We face a reckoning from the treacherous breach in our relationship with nature. We’ve been acting like a rock star trashing a hotel room, and it’s the morning after. But this hotel is planet Earth. The guest rules are non-negotiable. If we don’t change our ways fast, management may vote us off the island. (More.,..)

Water is Now seen as a Commodity rather than a Basic Right

While some may assume that technologies often make women’s lives easier, it is rare they there are panacea for poverty, especially since water is increasingly scarce and expensive..

6.7 billion people along with wildlife, ecosystems, agriculture and industries share the less than 1% of the world’s freshwater that is potable and accessible for use. And this small amount is rapidly depleting due to climate change; increased contamination; and escalating need by people, farms and industries for daily use.

The increasing scarcity and privatization of water means a number of things for women. First, as private companies gain ownership rights to freshwater sources, women who could previously walk to them to obtain water are now being restricted from or even charged money for doing so. [3] Second, companies who purchase sources bottle the water to be sold rather than allowing local access to it, as it’s more profitable to do so. Even when companies build and make available taps to local municipalities, they sell it at costs that are prohibitively expensive, especially for poor women. [4] And since there is no substitute for water and water is absolutely necessary, without regulations, corporations can charge what they want for it, and people have no choice but to pay, if they can.
