Protecting The Environment is Everybody’s Duty

For the well-being and survival of our planet and the human race

ABC Environment Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Protecting the environment is a global problem, which needs a global solution (For without nature we do not exist. pdjmoo)

If we want to manage the world for future generations, we need to define what kind of world that should be. Credit: NASA

ACHIEVING A MORE SUSTAINABLE world presupposes a worldview that considers well-being not only in terms of income, but also in terms of human security and opportunities for every person to thrive. It is worth considering what the world would look like from such a perspective.

For starters, it would be a world in which people live free from conflict over land, water, and space; and that ensures food security for the 739 million people who are hungry or malnourished today. Such a world would preserve the 20,000 species of animals and plants that face extinction, understanding their power to heal us physically and spiritually. It would draw us back from the brink of unstoppable global warming and its consequences for coastal communities, weather patterns, and, in some regions, habitability. It would protect sites of extraordinary natural beauty and inspiration. And, for future generations, it would be a world that is more sustainable than ours…. The Common denominator among all living things

IS NATURE

Finding A Way For The Greater Good

An Urgent Task

OUR HOME: We Live on a Wondrously Diverse Planet and We are a vital, integral species within the Magnificent Web of Life not separate from it. Nature needs us. Let us Honor and Respect That

THE GREAT AWAKENING

In just over 250 years we have consumed or destroyed what took millions and millions of years to evolve…

We now understand that the majority of life on Earth has never been – and will never be – known to us. In a staggering forecast Edward O Wilson, eminent Harvard biologist, predicts that our present course will lead to the extinction of half of all plant and animal species by 2100…. – “Animal Extinction – The greatest threat to mankind”

Over the last 60 odd years we have become preoccupied with, and fixated on ourselves, our man-made lives of production, indiscriminate consumption and lust for profit. self-gratification and status. In this process we have increasingly excluded from our daily decisions and equations the well-being of others and Nature’s life supporting eco-systems. We can now see how this myopia has wreaked havoc upon both our environment and all species with in it –our societies, our communities and ourselves.

While we were flying high our natural world (and us) began to get sick, really sick .  Greed took over from compassion, and wealth negotiated itself more wealth at the expense of the average man, woman and child setting the stage for a global uprising and reawakening.

We forgot our deep and profound responsibility to care for and nurture the greater whole. We forgot that we abide in Mother Nature’s womb, dependent on Her every second of every day. Just as we depended on our mother for nurturing and sustenance while in her womb, we depend on Mother Nature’s health, abundance and generosity for our daily nurturing and sustenance and FOR SURVIVAL as a species. This amnesia has resulted in us almost consuming ourselves out of existence and, in the process, we have lost our connection to community, to each other and to the essential natural processes of life.

EXTINCTION CRISIS – ECOLOGICAL ARMAGEDDON

In 40 Years HALF world’s wild animals have been wiped out:

Without Nature We Do Not Exist. Period

It is an illusion to expect healthy, balanced lives without a healthy, balanced natural world. Her health is our health

While we were flying high our natural world (and us) began to get sick, really sick . Greed took over from compassion, and wealth negotiated itself more wealth at the expense of the average man, woman and child setting the stage for a global uprising and reawakening.

A Perfect Storm is approaching – a combined environmental, economic and social collapse UNLESS we change our attitudes and priorities in life NOW, and even then, we may well have passed the tipping point of what our biosphere can handle.

The major difference this time, than the Great Depression or any other time in human history, is the environment – its massive degradation and depletion by man – the degree of which has never before been seen on this planet – and the cumulative effect is the cause of Climate Change.

We depend upon a healthy, balanced natural world for our very existence – as does all life. Our eco-systems have been plundered, pillaged and polluted to a point, in some cases, of no return; species are disappearing at an alarming rate totally destroying the biological and crucial biodiversity balance of the planet. Our common life’s values and the dignity of cultures have been dismantled as we gave ourselves over to the Age of Consumerism.  When Drilling for Oil has become a greater priority than clean water and healthy food, we have no choice but to revisit our values in life. What we do and choose now will set the destiny of humankind for centuries to come.

Get Ready for the Ride of Your Life

Given that it takes hundreds of thousands to millions of years for evolution to build diversity back up to pre-crash levels after major extinction episodes, increased rates of extinction are of particular concern, especially because global and regional diversity today is generally lower than it was 20,000 years ago as a result of the last planetary state shift. … Possible too are substantial losses of ecosystem services required to sustain the human population. … Although the ultimate effects of changing biodiversity and species compositions are still unknown, if critical thresholds of diminishing returns in ecosystem services were reached over large areas and at the same time global demands increased … widespread social unrest, economic instability and loss of human life could result

Whee!

How close are we to such a global state shift? One way to conceptualize it is to visualize the percentage of the Earth’s terrestrial ecosystems that have seen local state shifts:

THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION IS UPON US – CAN HUMANS SURVIVE?

Profiting From the Destruction of Our Planet

This particular VIDEO  addresses THE OCEANS and the mechanized, industrialized overfishing industry.

We have objectified life on earth to such an extent that we forget profits and abundance depends on us restoring and nurturing that which we depend on for our very existence. Remember, we cannot restore our forests, soil, oceans in five minutes.  It took millions of years to evolve and in 50 years we have almost totally destroyed her ability to regenerate within her own natural systems  (See my blogs AN URGENT MEMO TO THE WORLD and  CHANGE WE MUST)

Our Big Industrial Food industries have taken us to a point of almost no Return.   We consuming ourselves out of existence, through total disregard for the need of the planet to maintain its ecosystems, biodiversity and health in order to feed us. We are now facing a dying planet.  We have lost touch with the once-upon-a-time hands-on connection to our natural world. The mega industrial corporations keep trying to contain Her and force Her to produce more than She is capable of.  We have even resorted to genetically engineering our food sources, creating aquatic man-made farming, confining our animals by the thousands in CAFOs, breaking down biodiversity through monoculture BigAg farming and allowing industrial fishing to take all the fish in the sea they can.  The Planet is in Crisis, but it is still business as usual.  And the multi-million public relations green-washing campaigns are in full swing so  we can keep on keeping on with the very practices that have brought us to this brink. More, Bigger, Faster. This insanity and craving for profits, control and domination, makes us blind to our first priority–which is nurturing and sustaining our natural world–our only life support system (See my blog: Urgent Memo to The World )

THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION IS UPON US – CAN HUMANS SURVIVE?

Is This Insanity Or What?

The Objectification of Life – and The Huge Price We Are Paying

By @pdjmoo March 10, 2012

What is it about the human psyche that is willing to destroy the very foundations of life that humanity (and all species) depends upon for survival?  Aren’t we supposed to be the most “intelligent” species on the planet?  Sadly, facts are showing that we have far less understanding of the natural balances required for the planet than our arrogance and intellect would suppose.

It seems this disease is pervasive right across the globe.  Like a swarm of locusts, we are ravaging and razing the earth to a point where life can no longer survive.  We continue to over-fish our oceans until 90% of the big fish are gone, devastating the natural ocean systems and their biodiversity.  Why?  For profit and under the guise of “feeding the people” Overfishing leaves swaths of Mediterranean barren

We continue to ravage the forests that hold so much life that maintains the natural balance and biodiversity of our lands, often displacing indigenous peoples from their homes, creating dependency.  For What?  Profit and the hunger/demand for timber and clearing of forests for non-regional monocrops, destroying thousands of species and their habitat in the process. Our Disappearing Forests.  (It takes 100 years to grow a 100 year-old tree)

We continue to “drill baby drill” even as we are faced with horrific oil disasters world-wide, destroying land and ocean life and ecosystems and costing billions in cleanups.  Why? For profit and the hunger for cheap fossil-fuel energy, oil and gasoline. GEO- ENGINEERING OUR CLIMATE: A HIDDEN COMMERCIAL VENTURE TO PROTECT THE STATUS QUO OF GENERATING CO2:

The arguments for and against climate engineering, and reveals the extent of vested interests linking researchers, venture capitalists and corporations with Clive Hamilton, professor of public ethics at Charles Sturt University in Canberra, Australia, He’s the author of Earthmasters: The Dawn of the Ag, e of Climate Engineering. There’s virtually no regulation of geoengineering. And when it comes to sulfate aerosol spraying, there’s nothing to prevent a government, any government, or even a corporation or a billionaire with a messiah complex, from launching a program of taking control of the Earth’s weather by installing this kind of solar shield. So the absence of governance, the absence of regulation and the exclusion, particularly of people from poor and vulnerable countries, is a very serious concern…. http://www.democracynow.org/2013/5/20/geoengineering_can_we_save_the_planet

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

“ChemTrails” and Climate GeoEngineering:  Long Held as a “conspiracy theory” evidence is now emerging that Climate Engineering is already happening around the world, and has been for years. Why has this information been withheld?  Could this “climate remediation”, “solar radiation management” experiment be further cause for the increasingly violent and extreme weather around the world?  Who is behind it?  The following videos, articles and investigations lay out indisputable evidence that climate remediation/climate geoengineering is already underway and we should all be outraged at this secretive, potentially devastating assault on our planet without serious, independent scientific peer reviewed studies.  The only way to stop the impending adverse affects of climate change is to stop doing what is creating it, not further destroying our atmosphere and environment, or finding bandaid “solutions” that allow us to keep on with the industrial pollutions and environmental degradations that created it in the first place.

The World of Geoengineering | ETC Group Maps of Known Earth System Experimentations  ETC Group publishes a world map of geoengineering — the large-scale manipulation of earth or climate systems. While there is no complete record of the scores of weather and climate control projects in dozens of countries, this map is the first attempt to document the expanding scope of research and experimentation. Almost 300 geoengineering projects/experiments are represented on the map belonging to 10 different types of climate-altering technologies.

Comment by @pdjmoo: “Even the idea of manipulating our climate makes my hair stand on end.  We humans have so little knowledge about the grand intricacies of how our natural world and atmosphere work.  It is all interconnected in such intricate ways and science is just in the infancy stages of understanding it.   Remembering that the atmosphere has no boundaries, nor can we humans control the wind or ocean patterns, the prospect of a devastating domino affect on land and sea could literally wipe out all life on earth.   There is only one way to address climate change…and that is to stop doing what is creating it.  Trying to address the symptom instead of the cause is like treating sun-stroke instead of staying out of the sun”…pdjmoo SEE My “Urgent Memo To The World”  Read the rest of this entry »

Midway – Message from the Gyre

Some extraordinary — and upsetting — pictures by http://www.chrisjordan.com show directly how our waste impacts our environment and all species within our oceans – and ultimately us! The foregoing photographs of albatross chicks were made on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking. Read the rest of this entry »

How ocean acidification could disrupt the entire food web, with dire consequences

What they (scientists) say is this: the oceans are 30 percent more acidic today than they were during pre-industrial times and, if we continue burning fossil fuels as we are now, we will double the ocean’s acidity by the end of the century. Scientists fear many organisms may not survive so radical a shift in chemistry. And some of those organisms form the foundation of ocean food webs. If they perish, what happens to the tens of thousands of species further up the chain? What happens to our shellfish — our oysters, clams, mussels — that appear particularly vulnerable to ocean acidification? VIDEOS, READ MORE….Sigourney Weaver: Protecting Our Oceans for Earth Day.

Global Climate Change Cause Is Collapse of Nature

We are in the midst of the greatest mass extinction since the untimely demise of the dinosaurs. Fully half of the world’s species of plants and animals — from cuddly tigers to freakish blob fish — will be gone by the close of this century. The bewildering variety of ecosystems that sustain these living things are also being degraded or destroyed. What scientists have blandly labeled the “biodiversity crisis” actually amounts to the collapse of nature, and we are the prime culprit. Is it too late to save the seas that sustain us?

It’s not just ruthless whaling and foolhardy fishing practices that are plaguing the world’s oceans. Underwater, things are bad all over — from the acidifying Atlantic to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. A perfect storm of climate change, pollution, and rapacious global fishing practices has the potential to gravely imperil Earth’s oceans.

If more action is not taken to sustain these vital ecosystems, most may be lost within two decades

UNITED NATIONS:

In a new report released today, the agencies estimate that carbon emissions – equal to half the annual emissions of the global transport sector – are being captured and stored by marine ecosystems such as mangroves, salt marshes and seagrasses.

They add that a combination of reducing deforestation on land as well as restoring the coverage and health of these marine ecosystems could deliver up to 25 per cent of the emissions reductions needed to avoid ‘dangerous’ climate change.

More than 23,000 Dolphins brutally slaughtered is Enough!

By the thousands they are herded into the little cove in Taigi, Japan where there is no escape. In this video you will see and hear the terror of the dolphins as they try to flee only to be driven to shore where the brutal massacre begins.  Cutting them to pieces while they are still alive, babies and mothers, being stabbed and punctured over and over again, the screams of death by the dolphins are horrifying. THE ANNUAL DOLPHIN SLAUGHTER IN TAIJI, JAPAN

Japan Dolphins Day 2013

Each year from September 1 to around the end of March, hundreds of dolphins are slaughtered in Japan. Fishermen round them up using sound barriers to disorient and herd the frantic pods out of their normal migrations into hidden lagoons like the one featured in The Cove.

In some cases, individual dolphins which are deemed as being ‘show quality’ (and, often, who look like Flipper, the iconic dolphin from the 1960’s television series), are selected by trainers and sold for upwards of $150,000 USD to marine mammal parks around the world, where they will remain in captivity performing as circus acts for the rest of their lives.

The remaining dolphins are then inhumanely killed. The butchered dolphins are used for food, while the Japanese government intentionally shelters people from the dangers of eating their contaminated flesh. Consumers of dolphin meat run the risk of mercury poisoning due to high levels of the toxin within the animals. Adding to this danger, much of the pricier whale meat they purchase is actually mislabeled toxic dolphin meat. While the Japanese government defends dolphin hunting as part of their cultural heritage, this tradition has serious health effects on its own people.

The more lucrative captive dolphin industry is the driving economic force behind the dolphin slaughter in Taiji. In the U.S. alone, dolphinariums represent an $8.4 billion industry. A dead dolphin fetches a mere $600, as compared with the hundreds of thousands that can be made from live ones. International law provides no protections against the killing of dolphins, and other slaughters occur in places outside of Japan. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) affords no protections for 71 (out of 80, known) cetacean species, including all dolphins and porpoises, which is why Japan and other countries can legally kill them by the tens of thousands.
